Barbaresco Autinbej is a wine resulting from the union of different vineyards (cru) of the Grasso family, those that grandfather Ernesto called in Piedmontese the “autin bej”, or the most beautiful and sunniest vineyards or parts of vineyards. An authentic Barbaresco made as it once was, when the tradition was to unite the most suitable vineyards, each bearer of different characteristics but at the same time a complete expression of the territory and of the variety. Following the fermentation in steel, the wine spends 24 months in large Slavonian oak barrels and about 4 months in the bottle. Barbaresco Autinbej by Ca del Baio is an important wine, with a wonderful deep garnet red colour. Although 2017 was a hot and not very generous vintage, the Grasso family has skilfully made the best of it, creating a very pleasant wine, with persistent but warm tannins, which are enveloped in aromas of red fruits and compote.

Even before the wine, what captivated us about Ca del Baio were the people: Paola, Valentina and Federica, the three Grasso sisters who, following in the footsteps of their father Giuliano and mother Luciana, carry on the family cellar, producing wine from four generations between the municipalities of Barbaresco and Treiso. A sustainable, careful approach and meticulous viticulture. A family affair as usual in these parts, in which the protagonists captivate with their kindness, integrity and hospitality. The memory of the lunch after the visit to the cellar with that knife attack prepared in front of our eyes, observing the authenticity of every gesture, breathing in the rites of sacred hospitality was only a prelude to the beauty of the wines drunk: true, direct, indelible.
